A redundant, private Fiber connection is in place between our Virginia and California data centers. This connection provides extremely low latency network operations between both facilities and a secure communication link for future services that will allow our customers to take advantage of multi-site hosting capabilities.

VA-IDC4 – Ashburn, VA

Our newest data center is located in Ashburn, Virginia. With a total of 171,200 sq. feet available for operations, this all-new Data Center represents the pinnacle of achievement for Data Center Operators, DuPont Fabros. Built from the ground up and launched in 2007, VA-IDC4 is considered to be the prototype for future ground-up development projects and DuPont Fabros believes its flexible design and enhanced power and cooling capacity make it one of the leading data center facilities in the world.

The Facility:

VA-IDC4 is situated on 17 acres of land at the Ashburn Corporate Center in Loudoun County, Virginia. Ground-up development began in 2006 and was completed in late 2007. The facility’s flexible design and enhanced power and cooling capacity make it one of the leading data center facilities in the world. The raised square footage is divided into 20 separate computer rooms, each of which is served by an independent and dedicated critical electrical backup system. This design enables each computer room to function independently. VA-IDC4 consists of approximately 300,000 gross square feet (not including 40,000 square feet dedicated to housing generators) and 171,300 raised square feet, with a critical load of 36.4 MW.

Commercial Power:

  • 34.5 kV power feed provided by Dominion Virginia Power
  • Dual Input 300kVA PDU’s (power distribution units) – 600 volt primary, in our data room, each fed from a preferred source and back-up source.
  • The facility uses one CPS (continuous power supply) and we have our own CPS unit that serves our data room (N+1).

Backup Power:

  • 32 Rotary power systems with 1300 kW of critical output for N+2 redundancy
  • 32 diesel-powered emergency generators with 2,250 kW capacity for N+2 redundancy
  • 200,000 gallons of fuel on-site, comprised of four 50,000 gallon tanks. The facility is also on the emergency fuel list in case of a natural disaster.

HVAC/Heat Rejection:

  • 8,860 tons total refrigeration capacity (8 Chillers at 1080 Tons each).
  • 26 CRACs (Computer Room Air Conditioner) units inside our data room.
  • One chemical treatment station.
  • Six chillers can handle total maximum load, giving building N+2 redundancy.

Fire Suppression:

  • Double interlock, pre-action system enabled by activation of VESDA (very early smoke detection alarm) and/or smoke detectors. Loss of air pressure in the pipes caused by a broken sprinkler head will cause water to discharge only if smoke detection is present. The system is monitored 24×7 by on-site personnel.

EL-IDC3 – El Segundo, CA

Our data center in El Segundo is a state-of-the-art, built to Tier IV specifications, Data Center that satisfies the evolving needs of our customers seeking reliable facilities for mission critical IT operations.

The Facility:

The space is in approximately 7,000 square feet currently with room for expansion up to 40,000 square feet. The center is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year. On-site armed security is around-the-clock. They monitor the alarm system and security cameras that are on all perimeter points of ingress/egress to the building. Bulletproof security station and shipping/receiving areas with a Biometric security system are also in place. Our personnel require authorized escorted visitations. 24” raised floor manufactured by Maxcess covering every square foot of our cages, MDF and Network Operation Center.

Commercial Power:

  • Two separate power feeds provided by Southern California Edison.
  • Power supplied from two separate SC Edison substations. Four transformers at 3,750 KVA each serve building load.
  • Four PDUs (power distribution units) in our data room, each fed from a preferred source and back-up source.
  • The facility uses one CPS (continuous power supply) and we have our own CPS unit that serves our data room (N+1).

Backup Power:

  • Building can operate at 100% connected load on five HiTecs and two standby generators.
  • Six HiTecs “state-of-the-art” rotary UPS systems continuously generating conditioned power for N+1 redundancy. HiTec holds the world’s record in no break electrical output.
  • The HiTec system feeds redundant switchgear providing power to mission critical loads.
  • Three 2-megawatt standby generators serve facility essential loads. N+1 capacity with swing generator.
  • One 2-megawatt stationary load bank located on roof connected to the power backbone allows for bypass testing and duty cycle maintenance.
  • 50,000 gallons, On-site comprised of two 25,000 gallon tanks. The facility is also on the emergency fuel list in case of a natural disaster.

HVAC/Heat Rejection:

  • 3,350 tons total refrigeration capacity (5 Chillers at 670 Tons each).
  • Seven 30-ton CRAC (Computer Room Air Conditioner) units inside our data room.
  • Five cooling towers
  • Five chilled water pumps
  • Five condenser water pumps
  • Five chemical treatment stations
  • Three chillers can handle total maximum load, giving building N+2 redundancy.
  • Building has own water well for its HVAC backup system so it is not dependent on city for continuous operations.
